How to play a .qbx dashcam video on a Mac

The in-car video came as a .qbx file, and nothing on the Mac will open it. Here is what the file is and the ways to watch it.

What a .qbx file is

.qbx is the recording format of the Flashback in-car camera system from Safe Fleet Mobile-Vision, used by police departments. It isn't a standard video file: it won't open in QuickTime, and VLC doesn't read it either.

Ways to play it

  1. Use the player that came with it. Agencies often deliver .qbx files with a copy of the Flashback player, which is a Windows program. On a Mac that means a Windows computer, or Windows running on the Mac.
  2. Ask for a standard copy instead. The Flashback Player doesn't export video, but the agency's evidence system can produce a standard video file, or a DVD that plays anywhere. A request that gets you what you need:

Produce <file name> as an MP4 or AVI export from the agency's video system, with the original date and time shown on the video.

  3. Convert it. LexProxy members can turn a .qbx file into an MP4 with the Video Converter, below.

For LexProxy members

The easy option: the Video Converter

LexProxy members who are verified Georgia attorneys get the Video Converter free. Upload the file, download the MP4. It takes .qbx (Flashback dashcam), .asf, .avi, .ts, .3gp, .mkv, .wmv, and HEVC .mov and .mp4.

Both files are deleted an hour after you download. LexProxy never stores the video. The converter runs on LexPhone and opens from your LexProxy dashboard.
